Welcome to See How the Land Lies; a New
Zealand planning, land surveying and land development information website.
For most New Zealanders, their most valuable asset is their home and the associated land. For many people beginning work on their homes or land, the complexity of the regulations comes as a shock. The first time you hear about the legal requirements may be when your builder, an inspector, neighbour or a land surveyor advises you of them, or you suddenly get sent a copy of a notified application. In some districts you must get resource consent from the council to plant a tree, or for a farmer to place a temporary silo on their farm! Surveyors and planners are the professionals that are at the forefront of dealing with these regulations.
Town planning, city planning rural planning and resource management planning in New Zealand is often mentioned in the media as being over regulated and it can be very confusing, especially for those of us who find themselves thrown in at the deep end.
This is where I step in. I set up See How the Land Lies with the purpose of giving you free information about the planning or surveying processes you are either going through or are considering going through.
